Kenyans in diaspora denied their constititional right

Kenyans in diaspora have voiced out their disappointment o the recent indication that will not be participating in the elections.

According to the Hon. Wamalwa, the cabinet’s decision was informed by the time and financial constraints facing IEBC.

This reasoning in my view raises two questions:

  • how independent is IEBC?
  • Why did the cabinet make such a decision without consulting IEBC?
  • why is it being declared now?

2013 elections minus Kenyans in diaspora

What the cabinet decisions  means is that:

  • money has gone down the drain from all the trips the IEBC officials made abroad to establish numbers of Kenyans who are eligible to vote
  • politicians lost ground by spending time campaigning abroad
  • the IEBC might not be as independent as we thought.

I do agree with Hon.Peter Kenneth, that the excuse given by Cabinet as to why Kenyans in diaspora cannot vote is shallow and lacks merit. Why didn’t the IEBC  put in place mechanisms required to facilitate this process from when they were sworn into office? how can they say finances  are not adequate? did they even factor in this aspect in the budget they submitted to treasury?

What needs to be done to enable Kenyans in diaspora vote:

The following ought to be done:

  • set apart funds from the current IEBC election budget to facilitate this exercise.
  • recruit  clerks from Kenyan students as abroad..as they will be able to make some pocket money while at the same time serve their country
  • biometric kits ought to be sent to strategic embassies, and Kenyans living in those countries requested to make efforts to access the poling centers

To IEBC….

Please do not deny Kenyans in diaspora their right to vote.

To the Kenyans in diaspora.…. i wish you well in the case lodged within the court system
