Voter Registration Ends

Voter registration ends

The one month vote registration for the 2013 polls came to an end  yesterday.

Almost 14 million Kenyans will be  exercising their democratic right come March 4th 2013,as they duly registered with IEBC as voters.

While i commend the IEBC for having kept their word of not extending the deadline for voter registration,i do have a problem with how they organized the whole exercise. The IEBC spent a lot of their effort and time in pushing for the purchase of the BVR kits, instead of addressing the following:

  • how to ensure students in our local colleges and universities who were sitting for exams register as voters by setting up  registration desks in close proximity to these institutions
  • the lack of ID cards by many Kenyans, and how then to use the waiting card as a registration document subject to the holder producing an ID card before January 2013
  • how the pastoralist community would  participate in he voter registration exercise
  • the role politicians could play in encouraging Kenyans to vote

Voter registration ends,What next

I’m therefore calling upon the IEBC to start putting in place the required logistical arrangements in planning for the elections. The number of people who participated in voter registration exercise as at 18th December should help  IEBC establish the following:

  • counties that will require more polling clerks to reduce on the long queues
  • how to get the pastoralists vote
  • lobby with the Government to declare March 5th a public holiday for people to have time to travel back to their places of work after voting
  • planning for the run-off(incase we get to this)
  • Set up a date for the run-off and declare a public holiday for Kenyans to travel to and from their voting counties

To the MPs who are crying foul over the lack of extension as the voter registration ends,i have no words to express my dissapointment in you. While some of the points you raise are valid,i have no clue why instead of you  raising these points before the voter registration exercise commenced, you kept lying to the public that the BVR kits would give us cancer. It is however good that the numbers given by IEBC indicate how dismal votes some of you wil get from the counties you intend to represent.I wonder, how many MPs registered as voters?

That said,to all Kenyans,as the voter registration  ends, lets us allow no one to breach our peace as Kenyans.
